It is perfectly possible for a science teacher to be respectful of the worldviews that students occupy, even if these are scientifically limited, while clearly and non-apologetically helping them to understand the scientific worldview on a particular issue. Science educators and teachers need to take account of religious worldviews if some students are better to understand the compass of scientific thinking and some of science’s key conclusions. I end by drawing some initial conclusions as to what might and what might not be included about religion in school science lessons. I then explore how people can see the natural world, depending on their worldview, by looking at two contrasting treatments of penguin behaviour, namely that provided in the film March of the Penguins and in the children’s book And Tango Makes Three. This paper begins by examining whether ‘science’ and ‘religion’ can better be seen as distinct or related worldviews, focusing particularly on scientific and religious understandings of biodiversity. Instead of promoting a religious world view, we should teach our children what science knows about religion, i.e., how science explains the existence of religion in historical, biological, psychological and sociological terms. For this and other reasons, religious education should be kept away from public schools and universities. We submit that a religious education, particularly at an early age, is an obstacle to the development of a scientific mentality. Some consequences of our analysis for education as well as for education policy are explored. Regarding these aspects, closer examination reveals that science and religion are not only different but in fact incompatible. ![]() Conspicuous differences at the doctrinal, metaphysical, methodological and attitudinal level are noted. Authentication is crucial to this API moreover, much of the API realizes business transactions as two-phase commits, rather than just data look-ups or simple-minded updates. PayPal, for instance, exposed a SOAP API to its services soon after its 2002 acquisition by eBay. Financial companies are centers of SOAP reliance. SOAP examples are a bit harder to exhibit: many of the best-engineered ones are used purely internally, and aren't visible outside the organizations which rely on them. The API is thin it provides nearly-transparent access to the underlying documentbase at the same granularity as the documentbase itself. Its REST API focuses largely on queries and other read operations. MarkLogic, for instance, is a proprietary database product (and the company behind it) focused on management of massive document collections. Enterprise-style APIs, though, and especially those with specific requirements for transaction and/or security protection, are easier to implement with SOAP. Create-Read-Update-Delete operations are ideal for REST. It's no surprise that the overwhelming majority of organizations that expose straightforward data tables select REST. In this sense, REST has taken over.Īt the same time, SOAP remains effectively indispensable for APIs that need its functionality. Developers have gradually shifted from SOAP to REST over the last decade, as measured by catalogued APIs, searches, and surveys. The evidence of publicly-documented APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) provided through the Programmable Web Directory makes it apparent that only a minority of recent APIs choose SOAP exclusively. resistant to caching, and therefore scalingĬommonplace folklore says that REST has "replaced" SOAP.more rigorously secure, transactional, and reliable.likelier to expose business logic as opposed to data.SOAP relies on building XML-based systems, which means the amount of data is inherently larger, which in turn means it’ll cost you a lot more for central processing unit (CPU) and memory usage, usually to the point that you have to build custom servers to handle the load. SOAP-based APIs and SOAP Web services tend to run more expensive than other contemporary options. However, architects often abbreviate a typical choice in these terms: SOAP involves relatively tight-coupling between client and server, use of standard SOAP libraries, XML payloads, and attention to the SOAP standard, while REST focuses on HTTP transport, lightweight payloads, and Fielding's model of stateless resource representation. A REST-styled project might, in principle, rely on SOAP. Strictly speaking, SOAP and REST aren't directly comparable: REST is an architectural style, and SOAP is a specific protocol defined by a standard. answers to the same question: how to access Web services." Left-leaning watchdog group Media Matters for America has documented more than 20 instances of what it characterizes as COVID-19 misinformation, bigotry and anti-trans language on Rogan’s show - in 2021 alone. But he also has some libertarian views and expressed skepticism about vaccines, suggesting that “healthy” young people, for example, do not need to get vaccinated for COVID-19, contrary to what scientists and health officials were urging. He supported Bernie Sanders for president and stumps for universal health care. Rogan is no standard, one-sided media talking head. Or they could be inflammatory, as when Rogan hosted conspiracy theorist Alex Jones - who has spread bogus theories that the 2012 killing of 20 children and six educators at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, was a hoax - despite Jones being barred from Spotify for violating its prohibition on hate speech two years prior. The results could be wildly entertaining, as when Rogan smoked marijuana with Elon Musk, the billionaire founder of Tesla, in 2018. Since the show’s debut in 2009, Rogan, a mixed martial arts enthusiast and comedian, had made himself into a podcasting heavyweight, landing an eclectic range of guests and engaging them in freewheeling, uncensored conversations. There was one podcast that executives felt could accelerate Spotify’s growth at the pace the company wanted: “The Joe Rogan Experience.” Ultimately, the goal was to provide a pathway for different kinds of content to make its way onto the platform, as the company made clear when it announced that “audio - not just music - would be the future of Spotify.” Courting Joe Rogan This week, Spotify expanded its portfolio of podcast tools by acquiring two more companies, Podsights and Chartable. And with the company’s later acquisitions of startups such as Megaphone and Whooshkaa, Spotify could provide better tools for both the many podcasters who work with Spotify and the marketers who purchase ads on the platform. With podcasts, Spotify could be more in charge of its own destiny, and could pocket more of the advertising and subscription fees it relies on. (Earlier this month, he was named CEO of Peloton.) With Spotify Originals, the company would also create buzzy new programs in partnership with creators such as DuVernay’s Array and Higher Ground, the production company of former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama.ĭeveloping a portfolio of podcasts unique to Spotify - as Netflix had built a walled garden for video - was a key aim, according to several employees involved in the strategy discussions. Spotify would buy audio studios, such as Gimlet, and acquire exclusive rights to existing shows. To make Spotify a player in podcasting, Ek and his deputies, including Dawn Ostroff, a former television and magazine publishing executive, and Courtney Holt, formerly of Maker Studios, an online video network, set out on a multipart strategy. By 2018, the year Spotify listed its shares on the New York Stock Exchange, it was forming plans to pursue Rogan, hoping to supercharge its market position in nonmusic audio and to chip away at the dominance of Apple and Google’s YouTube. The company dipped its toe into video around 2015, but little came of it. For Spotify, the move into podcasting is the culmination of years of strategy to find a business that is more profitable than hosting music, for which it must pay about two-thirds of every dollar to rights holders. ![]() Now that you know the notes that make up the C Sharp Minor Triad, let’s next learn to find them on the piano. Let’s take all of this music theory and apply it to the keyboard. Though a triad can absolutely be played with the third or fifth on the bottom, for the purposes of this article, I will be showing you how to play it in the root position shown in the link above. The root is the lowest note, the third is in the middle, and the fifth is the highest. Starting from there, we simply add the third note of the scale, which in this case is E, and the 5 th note of the scale, a G#. Even though the sharp sign is before the notes in standard notation, a sharped note will be spoke the opposite way, as in “C sharp” rather than “sharp C” as might be implied by how the music is written. In music, the # is called a “sharp” sign and it signifies that the note it follows has been sharped, or raised by one semi-tone. We will start with the very first note, known as the “root”, the note that gives the triad its name. Now that we are aware of the differences, let’s take a look at the notes that make up a C Sharp Minor “ scale.”Īs stated above, a triad is made up of three notes. The difference is made merely by lowering the third note in the scale and what a difference it makes! So, a “triad” – or three notes, consisting of any given note combined with the notes three and five notes higher – in C Sharp Minor will sound much different than one played in C Sharp Major. Something in a minor key will invoke a sad, angry, or melancholy feel, as opposed to something in a “major” key, which will sound happier to our ears. In music, “minor” refers to the tonality of a piece, or the feelings that it invokes as we listen.
